Must think of more interesting filenames

Sketching from a silhouette, this took about an hour and a half. Amazing how much detail you can cram in when you do things in the right order. Drew this after watching a few Feng Zhu tutorials, he explains things so clearly. One of the things he expressed was how frustrating it is when you have an idea and you try to work backwards from the 'solution' that you have in your head, and how difficult it is to try and work out the formula to get there. Instead, work from the start of the formula and then build your solution from there. Bam! Much less frustrating, more satisfying end result and the process is way more fun. This method also accounts for my attention span limit before I want to draw something else.

Working in Grayscale

Working in Grayscale dramatically reduces your filesize, allowing you to go huge with your resolutions without lag. Lag is the worst.

Because the version of ScreenFlow that I have doesn't work with Lion UGH. It took such a long time to work up the guts to actually have it running while I draw, too.

Practising composition, contrast and lighting. I'm trying to get faster, once upon a time this would have taken me a month and even then I wouldn't have been happy with it. The biggest challenge I found when doing this was not being able to decide upon poses, positions, composition, backgrounds, themes... That's the biggest time waster - indecisiveness. An exercise in patience, this took one weekend.

Still a lot to learn and a long way to go...

WIP

1: Sketch out figure in black and white.
2: Couldn't help but add a tail. Changed her pose to be more animal-like.
3: Add face and gesture of hair. Smooth out some tone.
4: Add some detail, work out lighting.
5: CAN'T DECIDE ON THEME D-: Jungle? Mech? Jungle mech? GAAARGH. Add some colour, although this is probably too early to add colour since I don't know what theme I'm going with yet.
6: Chosen theme, now go wild with colour, lights and detail.
7: Add highlights and lowlights using black and white adjustment layer as a guide. Sign. DONE.

This is BoobyCrabs, an exercise in speed and patience. Also to teach myself not to get lost in the details and let some stuff go in order to achieve an overall effect.

Painted on one layer. Used a Black and White filter layer to keep levels and contrast in check. Took about 9 hours total.
It's like learning to draw again. As I never learnt to draw in school, so my stuff is not disciplined and often unfinished. I get bored after the initial thrill of drawing something new and getting the concept layers down. I then move onto the next sketch.
So I'm teaching myself techniques to get faster and more efficient, I have to finish what I started...

Squidface

"An erotic nightmare" - 9 hours total, a painting done from a tiny scribble that I did on my housemate's shopping list. Squidface comes from an obsession with squids, I've only recently grown enough confidence and patience with this texture to be able to recreate it.

The process

Sketch to Basecoat, Shading to Lighting and Detail, Clothing on a separate layer. Merge Clothing layer with Lighting and Detail, blend. Draw background. Blend figure with Background, add bounced light and shadows.

Gaviel

Gaviel. He came from a conversation with a colleague that led to an amalgamation of inspirational ideas ranging from Starcraft creatures to ugly Dell computers.

Took a while to decide upon a style to draw Gaviel in. I wanted to explore Comic Book art ever since I signed up to an App called xComics or something. This style of artwork captures action and emotion with high contrast, vivid colours and a variety of line styles. Next thing for me to try my hand at is portraying action. xComics or whatever they're called, have opened up a whole new world of art for me with the tiny thumbnails that are embedded in their emails.

Gargh. How I despise tiny thumbnails. They are like the unreachable ice-cream that lies at the back of the freezer.

Process

Sketch, keeping it loose just to line out the silhouette. Move to base coat layer to lay down a thick colour base to work from, define some outlines. Next layer for working the outlines to build structure and form, fill in any white bits. Then duplicate to Detail and Lighting layer to light the subject and further define structure, use the Navigator throughout to ensure it still looks good as a thumbnail. Final layer is to finish off by further defining dark and light areas to lead the eye to details, Curving and changing Brightness, Hue and Saturation until the desired result is reached. 9 hours total.

A practice with sketching, neat lines, perspective and layers. Also hands. Hands uuugh. Took two-ish hours. I was trying not to get carried away, I wanted a sketchy feel and so kept the erasing to a minimum on the red and blue layers. The black layer is where all the erasing took place. I find it interesting to see the thought processes in other sketches I've seen where you can see the rough layer behind the neat layer.

I know I've been away From here for about two years, I have been busy being a full time photographer. It was a great experience and I'm glad I had the opportunity to meet so many awesome people and use some of my creativity, something many crave in their jobs. BUT, I hit the metaphorical ceiling after becoming supervisor and decided my time there should come to an end.

I'm SO happy I've left! I was using about 1/127,837,164th of my potential there and NEED to do something which is even more awesome.

Here is something I did today. I decided I want to work with a spot of Matte Painting and Compositing as well as BLAPS the dust off my Wacom tablet and practice some of my drawing skills. Matte Painting wasn't something I ever had interest in before to be honest, but woooah I mean some Matte Painters out there are woooah. I like new things.

I wanted to do something that practiced compositing, drawing, matte painting and lighting. This piece incorporated all of those things.

Inspiration was taken from ImagineFX magazine, the background was based on a piece by Philip Straub. Google him, he's amazing!

woah. since getting my neeew Wacom i haven't moved from my computer. there's cheek imprints in my chair and everything.

i found a fellow artist who impressed me so much i had to collaborate with him. his name is Tungo. i sent him a skeleton lady i drew up and he decided to do things to it, then sent it back to me and so on, the final result was this. awesome. and so satisfying ! Tung has an excellent eye for detail and composition, i knew my work was in good hands. it's so good having people around u who are equally enthusiastic and passionate about what they do..

well i finished my degree. and so yes, i gave into the time-devourage that is Facebook. i decided to be a bum for a while in order to reflect and relax after being in education my whole life. i got bored after 3 days, i mean SERIOUSLY bored.. so, i productively got myself a new graphics tablet; the Wacom Intuos3 A5 wide, and decided to do some graffitis to test it out.. the coolest thing is that u can watch replays ! AND u can embed them ! sooo here u go..

finally got round to learning how to use this program called Ultra Fractal ..which i got over a year ago. i always loved fractals but now i can make my own !!! so fun but, i kept seeing them when i closed my eyes. cool... o and u can animate them too.. and do things in layers with plenty of options and have an endless amount of colour combinations and ooo ..cool.

and theeen, i carefully placed the render of the textured, animated and lit Binbody and Binlid into After Effects on top of the footage. the alpha channel is picked up straight away and taken out. then the shadow pass goes on top of this, the layer is set to 'multiply' and then blam, the shot is done. a minor adjustment to the opacity from 100% to about 80% makes the shadow look all the more convincing. it's all about subtlety.

i found some sounds to play with and left it to Jordan to do that part.. sounds are half of what makes this piece, and he did an excellent job of it i must say. he also made the rusty texture used on both Binbody and Binlid, this ensured that they fit together as a pair, just like me and Jordan *smile*. i just mapped his rusty texture onto Binlid's back. this was left to a last minute job, the important stuff was out of the way. i made the rest of the textures used on Binlid by playing with noise and bump maps in Cinema4D.

i'm so pleased with the result.. it was such a relief to get it done and to see it from scratch and see the results looking this good is so satisfying !

lighting for this shot had to be perfect. i used the basic 3 point lighting set up, it's a highly versatile, quick and easy method. alongside area shadows, 3 point lighting produces great results every time. above is a shot from the final Cinema4D file used, you can see the camera, tracking points, lights and of course, Binlid leading the way with Binbody following closely behind.

so, Jordan and i have to do some swapping back and forth of files to get the sizes and animation right. he's modeling and animating Binbody, and i'm modeling and animating Binlid. as i'm doing the tracking and compositing, i need to take his Binbody, put it into my tracked points file in Cinema4D and scale and position it where it's supposed to go. then i need to give him that file so he can begin animating. he then needs to give me his animated file so i can merge the files in Cinema4D and then position and animate Binlid climbing out of Binbody and walking off. while he's animating his Binbody, i can use the positioned and scaled static Binbody as a guide and begin animating to speed things up.

the most difficult part was getting the lighting to look decent, here i've used Global Illumination alongside a few lights. the tracking is not perfect because there is too much movement in the camera i think.. so this shot may have to be abandoned...

so earlier this week we were trying to think about how we wanted the scene to work.. i was thinking maybe we could have a really fake-looking CG car as the focus as if to say "this car is going to do something", and the bin can be somewhere in the background looking all inconspicuous... we downloaded loads of CG cars from this website.. this Beetle stood out to Jordan, and i wanted a yellow car... there is nothing but the model in the 3D scene because this was purely to test the shot to see if the car 'stuck' firmly to the ground, so no lighting and basic textures..

we decided against the idea of having a CG car in the end, it turned out to be too much work which is not what we want to do anyway. the Binbot is what we want to do.. the car would have to be lit and matched to the scene as well as Binbot. in this scene the car is not stuck to the floor and is bouncing around.. this extraness is not necessary. so we said no to the Beetle boogy.

ok fine it's a little overdue, since really we should have got the shot first before diving into the character modeling bit. i needed to scale everything to the correct size before animation can begin. modeled objects are fine to scale on their own, but scaling things that are animated is a nightmare. i've done things in pfHoe and Cinema4D before where the points come out so small it's near impossible to work with.. there's a spot behind Berrylands Station where there's rubbish around all the time, so took Jordan down there to get a few shots.. it turned out to be relatively clean when we went there though :( but it's ok. here is a screenshot from pfHoe where tracking begins...

Binlid's first rig test

a half done walk test thing, first the walk was ''acted out'' using my camera phone and whatever was close at hand, which turned out to be my mouse :) it is very much a rig test to see if all the parts moved how i wanted them to move.. but i sort of got carried away with it. i love his little crab legs ! mmm...

i wanted to animate using IK and NOT bones or joints. they consume lots of time which, on this project i don't have. so the components were placed into a hierarchy, ready for animation. it's that simple. rig test soon to come... in the above image you can see the green lines of the IK chains, i think the white dots are the various goals. below is a screenshot of the hierarchy system used, hope it makes sense...

I NEEDED A FOUR LEGGED WALK CYCLE ! DESPERATELY ! how do you find a robotic looking creature thing with four legs to use for reference ?

you Google for hours on youTube. that's how.

i love the look of this shot, it's so simple which is why it works so well. it's lit really well and the textures look realistically beaten up... the movement is excellent, and even better it looks like one movement that's been looped. the Traktor fits into the scene so well... Jordan loves this video, he wants to use the legs to use for his Binbody.. and i want to use the movement as a guide for Binlid's walk cycle. there's some bits on the end of the video where it looks like a small breakdown of 'how it was made'. i love that kind of stuff i want to do one for this project.. and the best part, Jordan wants to do it as well ! it's great how we see the same thing *sigh* we're so good together :)

dude with GI and shadow

below is the result of finding that button in After Effects, it turned out that it as actually one button click that took out all the white from the shadow pass ..it is the mode button on the actual layer. so now i know that, i can make shadows and lighting look really good. this is another test shot from another shadow / lighting test, so the shadow is not near perfect, but it's there ! and so is GI.. this time i put a small bit of transparency on the shadow.. i definitely need to work on my lighting skills when working on 3D compositions...

modelling thoughts

this here is the first attempt at modeling the lid of the bin, i think i will name him, "Binlid". i gave him simple legs with only four parts so that i may avoid using bones. this means i can effectively use Inverse Kinematics to animate him. this project needs to focus on looking good as a composition, which means the animation part has to be done and gotten out of the way as soon as possible. IK is a much easier and quicker way to do things, i find... :)

SFX, post presentation

one assignment out of the way ! It went really well, we were both relaxed and confident with our idea and planned method of execution :) so we didn't have a rubbishy keynote prepared or even a proper plan for the structure of the presentation, we knew exactly what we were going to cover so we could freestyle. Jordan's boards looked professional, i must say i didn't know what to expect, but what he brought in definitely impressed me. I had prepared a few video experiments using pfHoe and Cinema4D for the presentation. Binlid was modeled up and all the designs for his legs were mounted onto the boards. Stills of the wireframe mesh and a quick render of the model were also printed out for mounting. I finished off the presentation telling the class how much i was looking forward to completing this project with Jordan as my group *heart* check out his blog, digging for pixels.

yay i finally got a shadow working... still can't remember how to properly take out the white from the shadow pass... so annoying :( also the shadow is super black because this is another test, to fix this i just need to adjust the opacity of the shadow layer in After Effects. the shadow pass layer is placed underneath the 3D with the alpha because it looked wrong when placed on top, as the 3D dude has no texture at the moment...

SFX presentation

Jordan and i came into college to properly prepare for the presentation tomorrow. We have the drawings and scraps of paper, now it's about organising the scraps into a presentable form and deciding what exactly it is that we're going to do for the presentation, what order we're going to speak in and what it is that we're going to say. we went over the grading criteria once again, and made sure the vocabulary we were using includes all the technical terms. Since our skills compliment each other, the workload can be divided fairly equally, we included a breakdown of what each of us is going to do within the project.. tomorrow Jordan will have all the work mounted on A2 boards, and we'll be fully prepared.. i hope...

PRESENTATION NEXT WEEK :-|

Jordan and i have our idea finalised; we're going to have a car in an urban environment, ideally a yellow sporty looking car parked on a driveway. We have the shot in our heads, a car, a bin and a lamp post. Jordan did a course in 3D design, so he knows how to make proper boards and mount work properly. We now have plenty of drawings of draft ideas and character designs, Jordan is going to mount these onto A2 boards for next week to present evidence of development for each individual element of the piece. I'm going to begin to model the lid of the bin this week, Jordan will model the Binbody at some point. Maybe we can have some stills of the models in the presentation..

change of idea

well... the spider mouse has already been done... so have transforming cars, bikes, trucks.. general vehicles.. so we're thinking of doing an inanimate object.. a webcam, a fork, a wooden spoon... Jordan has experience modeling mechanical objects/characters.

Whatever we do, i've decided i HAVE to have crab style legs on my character whatever it is. It's something i've never had the chance to make in previous projects :)

We learnt about compositing in After Effects and looked at some more possible shots we could do. Andy showed us about tracking using After Effects using a random piece of footage and a monkey face.. this was interesting but with the type of shot we're going for it wasn't going to work. We have to find another way...

The presentation for the idea is two weeks away, so we have to have our idea finalised. Both me and Jordan want to go for the element of surprise where we're not quite sure what it is that is supposed to be transforming, or we're not instantly aware of what it is that is supposed to be happening at all.. so with these elements in place, we see an idea forming... element of surprise, inanimate object.. we also wanted the typical opening shot we see in transformer clips of the sporty looking shiny car in the centre of the shot in an urban environment...

so we're upstairs in the common room.. Jordan throws out the idea, "we should do a transforming bin!" i think he was joking... but i thought it would be fun to do...

i tried lighting the scene with Global Illumination, this method works well with still image composites.. but i'm not so sure about using it with footage... there's also some lights in this scene to cast shadows, but i forgot how to properly remove the white from the shadow pass rendering in After Effects.. i bet it's something really simple like a single button click somewhere... :(

i needed a walk cycle for a maggot type snail creature thing... i couldn't find reference for this anywhere on the web, even after hours of Googling on youTube... so i used my head muscle and came up with this.. it's my submission for the D&AD character brief, and it is brief since i ran out of time with it. it took forever to render even over 5 machines, and THEN i realised that the texture wasn't mapped on properly :( poo. but oh well, one day i'll render out decent version. for now this walk cycle is pleasing. ignore the cabbage picture at the end..

ok so Jordan and i are working together..

we began by discussing what exactly it is that we wanted to do. We broke down the shot of the spider mouse and looked at each individual component and studied how it could have been done frame by frame. Since i'm already doing tracking-type shots for my double project i am familiar with pfHoe, which is a relatively affordable program available for Mac used for basic tracking shots at DV resolution. On my Windows Machine i have another tracking program called Boujou4, this is a more industry standard program for more feature-heavy shots. This program has more options and is far more high-end.. We will see which program we use when our shot is decided.. we might be able to get away with not even using tracking software at all...

today were supposed to choose our groups. We each showed what we wanted to achieve and whoever had ideas wrote them up on the board. These ideas were then posted up on KCDigitalArts, and we were supposed to decide whose ideas we liked and then we were to form groups on this basis.

i finally got my cube to stick to the table ! it was simply a case of orienting the scene properly so that the 3D axis is positioned precisely in the scene where the 3D object is to go, now it's simply a case of working on shadows and lighting...

problems do have solutions !

I FOUND OUT WHY MY 3D THINGYS KEEP FLOATING NOW ! when creating the camera solve in PfHoe i quickly realised what the orient scene button actually does.. can't remember if Boujou has this button, or maybe i neglected to pay attention to it.. work continues to decide which program is better suited to my needs. this morning i have learnt that orienting the scene is what makes 3d thingys stick to the floor and not float about ! and it wasn't a problem with my QuickTime. wooop...

here is an example of what happens when the scene is not oriented properly... the camera is also moving too fast for the points to be trackable in pfHoe. The movement must be slower and a lot more steady for the shot to be successful...

second week of SFX

ok so we need to know what sort of thing we're doing now, i've been having a look around at films and of course, youTube. i've decided i definitely want to do something with compositing. Boujou4 showreels are particularly interesting and inspiring..

so we're supposed to know our groups next week, i think Andy's going to choose the groups for us.. i don't mind either way, but i really want to do something with compositing so it would be nice to work with people who are on the same wavelength as me :) we will see..

lady flump

here is a side view of the female flump with bones, she is just a slightly modified version of the man flump but coloured pink. modifications include being skinnier from the front view and she has shorter legs, this ensures that the man flump and lady flump fit together perfectly. they were maaade for eachother :) i don't think she needs to be boned tho...

First SFX lesson we are introduced to the module.. we look at examples from previous years and learn of what exactly it is that we are expected to produce. This sounds like an open module with a scope for experimentation. We all have different ideas and an array of skills but, as a group project everyone feels a bit apprehensive because group work is something we find difficult. I feel that as long as you can communicate and work together you can get the most out of it with your combined skills and shared workload..

my flumps are thinking of walking around in my shots, maybe i'll have the man flump run up to the lady flump and then hop on and do his thing... here is an early test of a four legged walk cycle which sort of turned into a trotty run cycle. it's not finished so it's a little robotty..

here are a pair of marshmallow shaped creatures positioned in a fashion that suggests that they may be fornicating in a car park. this is the most successful piece out of the three images produced for the Double Project brief. the setting and composition in addition to the lighting and shadows makes for an amusing piece.

the skull in this scene is my first real scene where i used Bodypaint in Cinema4D. i never got on with Bodypaint before in Cinema4D r9 because it was vastly confusing and not very user friendly. the Bodypaint in Cinema4D r10 is much easier to get the hang of and has a more intuitive interface with a simpler feel.

the inspiration for this piece came from a game called Micro Maniacs, specifically a character called Mesme, who was a disturbed child with the ability to cast nightmares into opponent's heads and send them into trances. i liked the look of this character and the fact that she was so creepy added to her appeal. in this scene we see a cone shaped character with strange hair kicking a skull down the road. this begs the questions, "where did this skull come from, and who did it belong to?" this adds a playful eeriness to the piece.

so i decided to make one of my characters a toy like plastic-looking guy who was stoned, and place him round the back of an alleyway near some bins. if you look carefully you will notice a syringe next to him. the aim of this character is to illustrate the thin line between childlike innocence and the danger of going astray by following the path of drugs, which ultimately leads to loneliness and self destruction. the syringe looks like a toy, this is particularly ironic because you are not likely to come across toy syringes that are made for children to play with. the whole scene works together to produce an altogether strange mix of uneasiness and discomfort while still retaining an element of playfulness.

above is a screenshot from the editor view of Cinema4D of a couple of models i am going to use for a composite shot.. i wanted the models to look toy-like, this adds to the sinister feel of the scene. i used Bodypaint 3D for the texturing on the skull, still haven't quite got the hang of this method of texturing yet...

Double Project: brief brief

- what is it ?
A series of short animations to go on T.V between programs. Examples include the MTV monsters and the showy animations on Channel 4 and E4 and Channel 5 and even BBC 2, these days they're getting all hi tec.

- when will they be on ?
Between programs but not daytime though, after watershed.

- why will it be on after watershed ?
I intend on making scenes with cartoon violence. Not for the younger generation.

- who is the target audience ?
My target audience is aged between 16-21 and probably in work or education. This agegroup is old enough to understand cartoon graphics and not get too offended. The target audience also needs to have a sense of humor... The audience will also have a taste for left-of-centre artworks, video and film.

- what is the ideology behind it ?
The idea that our minds are hardly ever with us when we are doing monotonous things like doing the same journey everyday, stuff we think about happening in life that never happens or only happens in movies. How a life can turn so monotonous that we crave for drama sometimes. We're all after ''something more''... My piece wants to create the most obscure situations and scenarios in the most open, public of places. What goes on in our heads that we never talk about openly.
